In celebration of 30 years of Swim With Mike, the fifth annual Swim With Mike - Hawaii will be held at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex Saturday April 24 from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Hawaii's top collegiate student-athletes, swimmers, synchronized swimmers, water polo players, water enthusiasts of all ages as well as all those that don't care to "get wet". The following former Hawaii student-athletes will join thirty other Physically Challenged Athletes as recipients of the Swim with Mike Scholarship.

Fulutusi Mailo, a former football player from Kahuku High School was injured in a body surfing accident at Seal Beach California which left him a quadriplegic. Mailo is the first recipient from Hawaii and is currently a Senior at BYU - Hawaii majoring in mathematics. Inspired by meeting Mike Nyeholt at the 2006 Swim Tusi vowed to swim at the 2007 swim. This was the first time he got in the water since his accident. In 2008 he swam his laps alongside Mike Nyeholt and this year he has plans to do even more. In the future. After graduation Tusi plans to pursue a career teaching mathematics at the high school level, perhaps at his alma mater, Kahuku High School.

Joe Broc, an outrigger canoe paddler from Kahuku High School was born with Spina Bifida - myelomenigocele. He is paralyzed below the knee and uses a wheelchair for mobility. Joe's disability has not deterred him from participating in life to the fullest. Joe competed for the Kahuku High School Varsity Outrigger Canoe Paddling Team as well as Manu o Ke Kai's club team. Joe competed in the World Sprints Outrigger Canoe Championships in the summer of 2008. He paddles with Pure Light Racing, a team from Hawaii made up entirely of physically challenged athletes. This team competes against able body teams in some of the most difficult outrigger canoe races in the world. Joe is a Junior at Hawaii Pacific University. Student-Athletes at Hawaii Pacific University have been very involved in Swim With Mike ever since Joe was admitted to school raising funds, volunteering and participating in the student-athlete relays. This past year Joe and Tusi and their families organized the first ever Swim With Mike Huli Huli Chicken Sale, raising more than $1600 for Swim With Mike!

Ann Hamanalau Yoshida, a graduate from Mililani High School and our newest recipient from Hawaii completed a B.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology at the University of Hawaii and began graduate studies at Utah State in Rehabilitation Counseling/Speech Pathology in the fall of 2008. Ann is discovering her potential through Surfing, racing, tennis, kayak, swimming, skiing, rock climbing, hand cycling, horseback riding... and anything else that catches her interest. Other than experience and wisdom, her life has not really changed since her accident which left her paraplegic. She was a gymnast, swimmer, hiker, surfer, runner, golfer, dancer and anything else that caught her interest. After graduation from Utah State University Ann plans on moving back to Hawaii to pursue her mission of helping others overcome adversity from within through counseling and speech pathology. Ann strongly believes in giving back to the community so she will be volunteering her time to her mission. Just as water is essential for life, surfing is in her life where ever life rolls her. Ann is constantly competing against her times and ability. Ann has completed several half and full marathons and after completing all of her course work at Utah State is completing a one semester internship in Reno, Nevada.
