Board & Staff

None of what we do would be possible without the generous support of the following individuals who, along with our volunteers, athletes, sponsors, campaign directors and donors, are our Swim With Mike family.

Mike Nyeholt, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman

Mike was an All-American swimmer and part of three NCAA championship teams at USC, graduating in Business Administration and Finance in 1978.  Three years later, he broke his neck in a motorcycle accident.  The resulting tidal wave of support grew into the Swim with Mike program which has provided scholarship assistance to 250+ recipients at 130+ schools.  Mike retired in 2011 as Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing for the Capital Group Companies, a global investment money management firm. Mike raised more than $2 Million dollars for Swim with Mike through his personal and professional relationships.  In his leisure hours he enjoys swimming for fitness, spectator sports, cheering for the Trojans and spending time with family.

Ron Orr, Co-Founder and Executive Director

Ron was a 6-time All American swimmer, USC record holder and member of three NCAA Championship Teams.  Shortly after graduating with a Business degree, Orr served the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee as manager of the Olympic venue for swimming and diving which opened its doors by hosting the 1983 annual Swim with Mike celebration.  Subsequently, Orr joined the USC Athletic Department development office as Assistant Athletic Director, eventually promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director, earning various Alumni and Staff awards.  In 2020, he joined the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena as Associate Executive Director of Development.

Swim with Mike Foundation Board of Directors

John Naber, President and Chairman of the Board

John has been closely associated with Swim with Mike since its inception in 1981.  As a USC teammate of Mike Nyeholt, Naber competed in the 1976 Olympic Games, earning five medals (4 gold, 1 silver) before becoming a sports announcer and corporate speaker.  Inducted into various Halls of Fame (USC, International Swimming, U.S. Olympic), he has written three Olympic related books and donates his time to many non-profit Boards including the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

Neil Macready, Vice President and Treasurer

Neil was an All-American swimmer and captain of the 1981 USC Swim team.  An original participant in the Swim for Mike event, he’s been active in Swim with Mike ever since.  After getting his BA (Poly Sci and Geography) from USC and his MS (Sports Management) from the University of Massachusetts, Macready spent nearly four decades in higher education and non-profit management for USC, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Providence Health & Services, and University of Redlands.

Jennifer R. Johnson, Secretary

Jennifer is a former intensive-care nurse, current lawyer and long-term advocate of social justice. In addition to her medical and legal backgrounds, Jennifer has two nephews who are wheelchair bound from separate accidents. Both Brandon (USC, 2010) and Benjamin (University of North Dakota, 2016) are proud Swim with Mike scholarship recipients.  In 2009, along with Tom Fuelling, Jennifer created the Swim with Mike Family Association which provides resources and support for families of Swim with Mike scholarship recipients.  Jennifer has mentored Swim with Mike recipients and has provided internships to various recipients at her Irvine-based law firm

Natalie Buchoz, Chair, Family Association

Natalie is a USC Trojan alumni and Swim with Mike scholarship recipient.  She was injured in a skiing accident her sophomore year of high school which paralyzed her from her neck down. Prior to her accident, she played elite softball, volleyball, track and field and more.  Currently, she is the Director of Public Relations for the nation’s largest neuroimaging company, Amen Clinics – which uses SPECT brain imaging to diagnose and treat patients with behavioral issues. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, visiting national parks and anything dog-related.

Nicholas “Nick” Enriquez, Chair, Scholarship Council

Nick, a former multi-sport athlete, experienced a beach diving accident at age 16 resulting in C4 SCI.  Ron Orr visited him in the hospital, to tell him about Swim with Mike, and Nick was inspired to graduate from Glendora High School to become a Swim with Mike scholarship recipient.  With the help of the Swim with Mike scholarship, Nick graduated from USC Leventhal School of Accounting 2003, Southwestern Law School 2007, and passed the California Bar in 2009.  Since 2010, Nick has worked for the Social Security Administration as an Attorney Advisor.

Bruce Furniss, Chair, Planned Giving Committee

Bruce is a founding board member and has been actively involved with Swim with Mike since its inception.  Bruce is a 1976 Olympic swimming double gold medalist, 2x World Champion, 10x world record holder and inductee in various Halls of Fame.  Bruce sits on the boards of the David X. Marks Foundation and the United States Olympic/Paralympic Association (USOPA) and is a Managing Director for Berkadia Real Estate Advisors in Irvine, CA.  With his brothers, Bruce established the Furniss Family Endowment for the benefit of Swim with Mike Foundation

Nate Higgins, Finance Committee Member

Nate was injured shortly after high school, in a workplace accident that resulted in traumatic brain injury and paralysis from the chest down.  Despite being told he would never swim without water wings, Nate completed both the Alcatraz and Golden Gate Bridge open water swims without a wetsuit, set three American Paralympic swim records, and represented the United States at the ParaPan-American Games.  Nate graduated from Gonzaga University and completed his MBA at USC on a Swim with Mike scholarship.  Today, Nate invests in real estate and works for the Small Business Administration.  He is currently training for the Paralympic Games.

Daryl Holmlund, Chair, Technology Committee

Daryl was a Swim with Mike scholarship recipient at Colorado State University (2010-11) and USC (2011-12), where he completed a Masters in Teaching. He ran track and cross country at Loveland High School (Colorado) and Calvin College, before a car accident caused spinal cord injury and paralysis. After finishing at USC, he taught high school English and Science in Los Angeles, San Joaquin County, and Long Beach. He currently teaches English and Journalism at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, where he is adviser to the student newspaper, the High Life.  Daryl’s original song, No More Wheelchairs, is the unofficial anthem of Swim with Mike. He enjoys handcycling, swimming, and leading music for church.

Mara Hunter Redden, Co-Chair, Family Association

Mara swam early in her career at USC while studying Physical Education and Recreation.  She also earned her Masters’ degree in Family and Marriage Counseling.  She worked at USC as the Associate Director of University Events and as an Assistant Athletic Director in Development.  Mara helped organize the original 1981 Swim for Mike event and has been the coordinator of the celebrations, along with an incredible team of volunteers, for every annual Swim since. A proud cancer survivor, she and her family established the Shawna Marie Hunter Endowment to benefit Swim with Mike, in memory of her sister.

Fred Uytengsu

Fred was the captain of the 1983 USC Men’s swim team, the year he earned his degree in Business Administration. He returned to the Philippines shortly after graduation to join his family business.  He was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2007 and was also bestowed the USC Entrepreneur of the Year from USC in 2013. In 2018 he stepped down as President/CEO of the Alaska Milk Corporation in the Philippines, but remains as Chairman. Fred spent 20 years as a competitor in Ironman Triathlons and has recently returned to Masters Swimming.
