Profile

Kevin Tompkins

Sports, particularly soccer and mountain biking, taught Kevin persistence, dedication and mental toughness, all traits he’s used on the path he's on today, both physically and mentally. In the summer of 2020, he was on a training ride in the mountains near his home in Colorado when he had an accident, breaking his neck at C5 resulting in tetraplegia. He was 15 years old and about to enter his sophomore year in high school, but entered Craig Hospital instead, where he says he learned the importance of helping others. Graduating high school with a 4.3 GPA, he is now a sophomore in the Mathematics Honors Program at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The self-professed “shy kid” has learned to value social interactions and courageously joined the Fiji fraternity at Colorado his freshman year.  He desires to use his math skills in AI, self-driving or analyzing science data and other applications to make life better for everyone. Kevin is a peer mentor at Craig and says his path combines resilience, connection, and purpose through his achievements and giving back to the community.  He’s looking for an adaptive sport he can master, after trying scuba diving, cycling and skiing. He appreciates software companies’ efforts to develop adaptive gaming devices, which he enjoys using.
