12Before being diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma (bone cancer) in his right hip in 2003, Adam was a very sporty young man with his main sport being soccer. He played other sports including ice hockey, tennis, rugby, swimming, running, cricket and basketball. After he was diagnosed he didn’t think much would change. He wasn’t fully aware of how much the disease would change his life. He received intensive chemotherapy over a 10 month period which in itself was a major challenge; however, the treatment that had the biggest impact was the surgery. In total Adam had 26 operations with the major operation involving the removal of his right hip, high radiation and subsequent re-insertion of the radiated hip, only to subsequently discover the occurrence of a bone infection which led to more operations. After being immobile for a long time and realizing that life as he knew it had changed forever, Adam went into a deep depression which he was only able to dig himself out of after he started playing wheelchair tennis more than two years later. Complications from surgeries have left him without a right hip and a large right leg length difference to the left. He is able to walk with a walking stick but it is uncomfortable and very painful. He uses a wheelchair much of the time. Adam has come to excel in Wheelchair Tennis and has played on the Australian Men’s World Cup Team and has been world ranked. Through international Wheelchair Tennis Adam met Dana Mathewson, Swim With Mike scholarship recipient and University of Arizona student. Adam becomes the fifth Swim With Mike scholarship recipient to attend the University of Arizona and joins Dana Mathewson and Dylan Levin on the Wildcat Wheelchair Tennis Team. Adam competed for Australia on the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics teams.
