Erin played as many sports as she could as a child and became adept at time management as those skills would allow her to play on club and school teams and keep her grades up as well. Throughout middle school, she played soccer and basketball and in high school, she played on the basketball and volleyball teams. After making the varsity volleyball team in her junior year she decided to concentrate on volleyball with the goal of becoming a collegiate athlete. The San Clemente High School Volleyball Team had just begun the pre-season games and as a Senior Erin felt like she was in the best physical shape of her life. She played a match and that night she experienced a severe pain in her back that went down the leg and would not go away. After weeks of doctor visits and tests he received the news that no one wants to hear, “You have cancer”. One day she was playing the volleyball game of her life and the next day she was in the hospital and was later diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma of the sacrum, a rare type of bone cancer. She spent most of her senior year in chemotherapy and radiation sessions. She could not attend school but was able to keep up with her studies and she was accepted to her “dream school” USC. As a freshman at USC Erin was unable to compete in sports and is tested for cancer every three months. USC Women’s Volleyball Coach Mick Haley invited Erin to work as the student manager for the team. While she cannot play on the team she is really enjoying the opportunity to be a part of a team again. Erin is happy to join the Swim With Mike Team.
