Kevin Lewis

Kevin has the distinction of being the first Swim With Mike recipient. He attended Rolling Hills High School, where he played Football and Wrestled Varsity as a sophomore. It was while practicing with a teammate he injured his spinal cord at C-5 leaving him an incomplete quadriplegic. He returned to school the following year and graduated with his class in 1976. Kevin transferred to USC in the fall of ’79. He was introduced to Mike and Ron in the spring of ’81. He was blown away by the generosity of the “Swim with Mike” family and was thrilled to receive funding from the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund to continue his education in the fall. Fall of ’82 Kevin started in the P.R. Dept for the LA Olympic Organizing Committee part-time while going to school. He quickly moved to the Sports Department when he was asked to write a proposal to include wheelchair athletes for the “XXIII Olympic Games. The men’s 1500m and women’s 800m wheelchair race was run as an exhibition in the 1984 LA Games and has been a part of every Olympic Games since. Kevin has always attributed his association with Swim with Mike and Ron Orr for opening the doors for him to the LAOOC. “There is incredible power knowing there is a community loving and supporting you.”In the late eighties, Kevin moved to the Seattle area to receive training in Information Systems. He has worked for Honeywell Inc, HAC, and Raytheon where he managed the IT Customer Service Dept. in Mukilteo WA.Kevin has enjoyed working on events and has worked for the 1990 Seattle Goodwill Games Organizing Committee as well as volunteered for the 1995 Promise Keepers conference at the Kingdom.Kevin is married to his beautiful wife, Kirsten and they live in Kirkland WA.2011 will be Kevin’s 30th anniversary being a recipient of Swim with Mike and he is excited to be .apart of the Swim with Mike Northwest.
