As a high school athlete, Marianne tried many different sports, including volleyball. She was paralyzed on a trip to a match when the bus carrying her and her teammates was involved in an accident. Marianne completed her undergraduate degree in psychobiology, and with the help of a Swim With Mike scholarship was able to complete her degree at the Keck School of Medicine, enabling her to become a practicing physician.
